Gov. Whitmer Walks Back Promise to Participate in Oversight Committee Investigation

It’s no secret Whitmer has been focused on politics during this pandemic and now it seems Whitmer is not keeping her pledge to participate in transparency that’s long past due to all Michiganders.

Gongwer Michigan is reporting that the Chairman of the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic has asked Republican legislative leaders for the panel to have full subpoena power following contradictions from Governor Whitmer’s office.

At a press conference on Monday, Gov. Whitmer was asked if she would provide documents and department directors if requested by the oversight committee. She agreed she would stating: “Yeah, of course, I think that it’s going to be really important that we observe all of the best practices, you know, as we are doing this, but absolutely.”

Despite her comments, media reports following the press conference suggested Gov. Whitmer may direct state departments and employees within the administration to not cooperate with certain requests made by the oversight committee if the request doesn’t meet her personal expectations.

Gov. Whitmer has not been transparent as to how and why a now canceled no-bid contract for COVID-19 patients data was given to democrat campaign vendors. It’s no secret Whitmer has been focused on politics during this pandemic and now it seems Whitmer is not keeping her pledge to participate in transparency that’s long past due to all Michiganders. – Tori Sachs, executive director of Michigan Rising Action
