Michiganders Waiting on Metrics and Milestones from Gov. Whitmer Take A Back Seat to Her National Political Ambitions

It seems Whitmer is more focused on raising her national profile by campaigning for Joe Biden than solving the health and economic problems ravaging our state.

Michiganders around the state wait for Gov. Whitmer to define what metrics and milestones will guide the state’s reopening as Michigan’s unemployment rate climbs to second in the nation.

At a press conference yesterday, Whitmer said the state needs flexibility, not “textbook-specific” markers to trigger the reopening as reported by the Detroit News

The lack of clarity and defined goals from Whitmer is irking even Democrats in the state. One of the most well known Democrats, Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, told WDIV that Whitmer’s plan doesn’t tell anyone anything. Hackel went on to tell the Detroit News, “All we hear from the governor’s office is they need more information, more data and more testing before the state is completely opened up. But no one can say if they are looking for specific numbers. Or percentages. It’s frustrating.”

Today, Gov. Whitmer told MLive reporter Emily Lawler that she “hopes” to allow ten-person gatherings at the end of this month but it would depend on the number of cases. However, there was no number of cases or percentage goals stated by the governor, leaving Michiganders in the dark as to what milestones the state is looking for.

Michiganders wait for details from Gov. Whitmer who continues to say words like ‘science’ and ‘facts’ without defining what those milestones and metrics are. As Mark Hackel has said, it’s frustrating trying to understand Whitmer’s lack of plans, but unfortunately it seems Whitmer is more focused on raising her national profile by campaigning for Joe Biden than solving the health and economic problems ravaging our state. – Tori Sachs, executive director of Michigan Rising Action.

Gov. Whitmer spent part of the afternoon today campaigning with Joe Biden during a Presidential campaign virtual roundtable. Yesterday, Whitmer was on ABC’s The View responding to a sexual assault allegation against Biden and then on CNN as part of her campaign to be considered for Biden’s VP.
