Whitmer Reminisces Biden VP Consideration Instead Of Making A Plan To Assist Students And Workers

Michigan’s families and workers are hurting and Whitmer is wasting valuable time promoting herself instead of working toward solutions.

December 8, 2020

Governor Gretchen Whitmer spent this morning reminiscing about the time Joe Biden considered her for Vice President during an interview with Politico just a day after extending school closures and restaurant shutdowns.

While the governor continues her own national self-promotion, the Detroit Free Press reports that Michigan restaurant owners were hoping the governor would instead work with them on a plan to reopen safely.

“Some restauranteurs, along with the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association, knocked the governor for not working with them on a compromise that would have allowed them to offer some degree of indoor dining during one of their traditionally busiest months.”

The Detroit News Editorial Board again urged Whitmer to “To heed the pleas of the business community and use these next 12 days to honestly assess whether the selective closings actually work” because “The answer can’t be yet another extension on Dec. 20. If that’s her only answer, many of the impacted businesses will never reopen.”

Meanwhile, The New York Times has reiterated the CDC guidance that schools should be given priority on reopening, saying:

“The new recommendations place high priority on keeping schools open, from kindergarten through 12th grade, saying schools should be both “the last settings to close” and “the first to reopen” because of the critical role they play in providing meals and support services to children. Closures take a disproportionate toll on low-income families, the agency noted.”

After Biden announced Whitmer would co-chair his inauguration, Michigan Rising Action called on Whitmer to forgo her salary

As long as Gov. Whitmer is preoccupied with serving on Joe Biden’s inaugural committee and reminiscing about the time she was passed over for VP, instead of working toward a plan to reopen schools and businesses, she should forgo her taxpayer-funded salary.
