Representative Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) voted in favor of the waiver for General Lloyd Austin, President Biden’s pick for Secretary of Defense, after criticizing him on Twitter less than two months before.
In December, Slotkin expressed her reservations about Gen. Austin, saying that selecting a recently retired general for a civilian role “just feels off.”
But when push came to shove, she fell in line with her Democrat colleagues and voted to advance Austin one step closer to his confirmation.
This is just the latest example of Rep. Slotkin falling in line with party leadership. After promising her constituents that she would work with President Trump while on the campaign trail, she inevitably hopped on the impeachment bandwagon after getting elected.
The Detroit News: “Freshman Democrat Elissa Slotkin, who represents Michigan’s 8th Congressional District, went back on her campaign promise to work with the president, which was crucial to her victory in a Republican-leaning district. She bought into the ‘walls closing in’ narrative and announced she was hopping on the impeachment bandwagon.”
Republican representatives Peter Meijer (MI-03) and Jack Bergman (MI-01) both voted against the waiver, citing concerns that Congress is turning the waiver process to the new normal.
