Whitmer Follows Polling Data Showing Emergency Orders Are Unpopular With Voters As She Declines To Impose New Restrictions, Offering Suggestions

During a virtual press conference this morning, Governor Gretchen Whitmer admitted that she spoke on the phone with President Joe Biden Thursday night and that he declined her request to send more vaccines to Michigan as the state continues to lead the country in COVID cases.

The coordinator of Biden’s COVID task force said more vaccines will not be sent to Michigan and that “Millions of doses have been distributed, but have not yet been administered” according to a tweet from the CNN White House Correspondent.

Whitmer flouted her own COVID restrictions in January to attend Biden’s inauguration because she said he “will be a great partner for Michigan.”

In her press conference, Whitmer did not mention any new orders or suggestions to stop the spread of COVID-19 in nursing homes or long-term care facilities that are once again seeing significant increases in cases. Data last updated by the state indicates there are at least 85 ongoing outbreaks in long-term care facilities.

“Governor Whitmer’s focus on politics and polling data during COVID didn’t pay off for her VP aspirations or the ability to deliver results for the state of Michigan,” said Tori Sachs, executive director of Michigan Rising Action. “Michigan led the country in strict shutdown orders and now our state leads in new COVID cases and job losses.”
