Lansing, Mich., July 1, 2021 – Today Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a veto for HB 4945, which would allow a board of any school district to be an authorizing body for a Strict Discipline Academy (a form of charter school), in addition to those who operate K-12.
A former student of an SDA currently at risk of closing due to the law’s narrow language testified in front of the Michigan House Committee on Education earlier this year. WATCH:
It remains unclear what will happen to the students of this or other SDA’s currently or in future risk of closing due to a loss of an authorizing sponsor.
“Governor Whitmer continues to put her political agenda before students. Her veto of this bill puts in jeopardy the future of a school and the education of the students who attend it.” said Eric Ventimiglia, executive director for Michigan Rising Action.
