Lansing, Mich., August 12, 2021 – Governor Andrew Cuomo’s (D-New York) resignation earlier this week spells trouble for other leaders, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who followed his lead enacting fatal COVID-19 nursing home policies. Governor Whitmer’s COVID-19 response in Michigan mirrored Cuomo’s disastrous policies and strategy in New York, where, if adjusted for population, the results were equally lethal. Breitbart reports:
“In Michigan, Whitmer issued a directive similar to Cuomo’s to her state’s nursing homes. Self-reported data shows more than 5,600 deaths of “long-term care” facility residents in Michigan, but the governor’s policy and data collection methods, like Cuomo’s, have been sharply criticized and also led to questioning from the DOJ.”
It remains unclear whether Cuomo will face further repercussions, but as the sitting Governor of Michigan, Whitmer will have a far more difficult time avoiding accountability. Last week, Rep. Lisa McClain sent a letter to the Department of Justice demanding an explanation why the DOJ is forgoing an investigation into Whitmer’s deadly nursing home policies. Michigan’s Auditor General announced last month that his office will conduct a review of Michigan’s COVID-related nursing home death data, the results of which will be completed between late September and early October.
“Governor Whitmer followed in Andrew Cuomo’s footsteps by placing Covid-positive patients into nursing home facilities – and both failed leaders attempted to cover up the deadly policy by hiding the data on nursing home deaths,” said Eric Ventimiglia, executive director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “The parallels between Andrew Cuomo and Gretchen ‘Cuomo of the Midwest’ Whitmer are striking, and Cuomo’s resignation should serve as a warning to Whitmer that no matter how hard she tries, she will not be able to avoid accountability for her deadly and misguided policies.”
