Lansing, Mich., September 3, 2021 – President Biden’s failures in Afghanistan are piling up by the day. The harrowing evacuation of Kabul has been well covered for weeks, but the administration’s mismanagement of the Afghanistan crisis dates back to earlier in the year. Members of Congress including Rep. Peter Meijer addressed a letter to Biden urging him to expedite the evacuation of Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders, Afghan allies which assisted U.S. forces over the past 20 years. Meijer detailed the President’s error in a tweet:
It is unclear why the Biden administration waited three months to begin the evacuation of SIV holders, but the delay is proving to be a fatal lapse in judgement. New reports are finding that the majority of SIVs were left behind during the evacuation. Many view Biden’s now infamous delay as the primary cause that the United States was unable to fulfill our promises to our allies and get them out of the Taliban’s Afghanistan. NBC reports:
“A senior State Department official said Wednesday that it appeared a ‘majority’ of Afghans who had worked for the U.S. military and applied for Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) had not been successfully evacuated and remained in Afghanistan. ‘I don’t have an estimate for you on the numbers of SIVs and family members who are still there,’ said the senior official, who was in Kabul for the evacuation. ‘But I would say it’s the majority of them, just based on anecdotal information about the populations we were able to support.’”
Later in the article, it was reported that Biden had the audacity to say that starting evacuations earlier would not have made a difference. Biden’s failure surrounding the evacuation of SIV holders then refusal to take responsibility is the latest demonstration of weak leadership. While he ignored the pleas to get SIV holders out of Afghanistan in April, new evidence shows that Biden knew how dire the situation was. In a transcript of a call between Biden and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Biden pushed Ghani to lie to the world and provide a positive outlook regarding the Taliban’s advance. In the transcript obtained by Reuters, Biden stated:
“‘I need not tell you the perception around the world and in parts of Afghanistan, I believe, is that things aren’t going well in terms of the fight against the Taliban. And there’s a need, whether it is true or not, there is a need to project a different picture.’”
In a Fox News interview earlier today, Michigan Congresswoman Lisa McClain issued a scathing rebuke of the President, who cannot seem to tell the truth about the Afghanistan evacuation.
With Biden’s failures regarding Afghanistan mounting, many are thankful that their elected representatives are showing courage and taking a stand against Biden and his compulsive lying.
“Michigan Representatives are leading the way to ensure that this administration is held accountable for lying to the American people,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “Right now, the people of Michigan have no faith in President Biden or his basement doctrine. Representatives Peter Meijer and Lisa McClain are taking action and trying to get out the people Biden left behind.”
