Michigan Rising Action Calls for the Resignation of Rep. Jewell Jones
Lansing, Mich., September 15, 2021 – In light of today’s revelation that Jewell Jones brought a handcuff key to jail, Michigan Rising Action is calling on State Representative Jewell Jones (D-Inkster) to resign effective immediately. Since his initial arrest in April of this year, Jones’ constant disregard for the law has eroded public trust in his ability to hold his elected position. His “rules for thee, not for thee” mindset has not only proven to be unbecoming as a state representative, it poses a threat to the public.
Jones also came under fire for questionable spending in his most recent campaign finance report, which included hundreds of dollars spent at a strip club.
Jones was initially arrested in April for drunk driving with a loaded weapon and resisting police. During the arrest, Jones flashed a badge when asked for identification and then threatened to call Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and slash police budgets shortly before his arrest, the News reported. Jones stated during the arrest “You know what? Big Gretch is the Homie. When she finds out about this, she might be a little upset about the treatment.”
Just days before Jones’ most recent violation, Governor Whitmer continued to inexplicably stand by Jewell Jones and his actions and even attended an event with him in Westland.
“It is time for Representative Jones to do the right thing and resign,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “Over the past five months Jewell Jones’ constant legal issues and abuse of campaign funds have been a massive distraction for his community.”
