Gretchen Whitmer’s Popularity Ratings are Tanking

September 20, 2021

Lansing, Mich., September 20, 2021- A new poll released today reveals Gretchen Whitmer’s popularity is continuing to decline. Since September of last year, Whitmer has seen her approval rating drop by double-digits. As Michigan residents look back at the Governor’s job performance since the beginning of the pandemic, they see a failed administration which has made a series of misguided policy decisions that devastated the state’s economy. The Detroit News reports:

“About 48% of voters approve of the Democratic governor’s performance and 46% disapprove.”… “The latest numbers are a marked shift from September 2020, when 59% of voters approved of Whitmer’s performance and 38% disapproved, according to the poll. In May, 50% of voters approved of her performance, while 44% disapproved, the polling firm found.”

Whitmer’s plummeting support can be traced to one key demographic: Independents. Independents helped deliver the state for Whitmer in 2018, but after three years as Governor less than 2 out of 5 Michiganders who do not affiliate with either party were willing to voice their support for Whitmer. The Detroit News continues:

“Much of Whitmer’s approval decline has occurred among independent voters, 39% of whom approved of her performance and 51% of whom disapproved, according to the poll, which has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.”

During a term marred by controversies like the deadly nursing home policy, crushing shutdowns and restrictions, failed campaign promises, and the blind following of a disastrous presidency, it is not surprising that Whitmer is quickly losing allies across the state.

“Hardworking Michiganders have had enough of Governor Whitmer’s failed policy agenda and her never ending string of controversies,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “While Whitmer has focused her time and energy on ingratiating herself with the Biden administration and playing to a national liberal audience, she’s left behind seniors, small business owners, and taxpayers across the state.”
