Dana Nessel and Jocelyn Benson Attack the Second Amendment

Lansing, Mich., September 22, 2021 – Today, the Attorney General and Secretary of State announced their support for legislation restricting Second Amendment rights in New York State. The draconian policy places nearly impossible restrictions on the ability for citizens to obtain a concealed weapons license. If the policy sounds like a law that would be enacted when America was a British colony, it’s because it was. In the amicus brief, Nessel and other signees reference colonial British law as a justification for New York’s new policy. The brief states:

“Northampton was ‘understood to be a complete prohibition on carrying weapons in public, at least in populated areas,’”… “Before the founding, many colonies regulated the carrying of firearms in public. For example, as early as the seventeenth century, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New Jersey adopted public-carry restrictions modeled on Northampton.”

The people of Michigan will be surprised to learn that the basis of Nessel and Benson’s support are restrictive, archaic measures enacted by a monarchy. While Nessel and Benson may have adjusted to living under unilateral rule, it appears that the state’s top lawyer and election official respectively need a refresher on our nation’s founding principles. Many are now concerned about what new restrictions on the Second Amendment  they may push in Michigan.

“Dana Nessel and Jocelyn Benson should focus on the many issues facing our state,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “If the Attorney General and Secretary of State are supporting strict gun control measures in other states, you have to wonder what type of restrictions on our Second Amendment rights they may have in store for the people of Michigan.”
