Michigan Republicans Pass Bill Barring Critical Race Theory From Being Taught in Schools

November 3, 2021

Lansing, Mich., November 3, 2021 – Yesterday, Michigan Republicans voted to approve House Bill (HB) 5097, which will block Critical Race Theory from infiltrating the state’s curriculum. The measure passed by a margin of 55-0, as House Democrats decided not to vote on election day. Passage of HB 5097 is being hailed as a massive win for Michigan students and parents. In a quote given to the Detroit Free Press, State Rep. Andrew Beeler said:

”A yes vote means taking a firm stance against the absurd claim that individuals bear collective guilt for historical wrongs committed by those who happen to share their race or their gender,” said Rep. Andrew Beeler, R-Fort Gratiot, the main sponsor of the bill.”

The passage of HB 5097 is a massive blow to big teachers unions, who have fought to eliminate Michigan parents’ voice in their children’s education. Earlier this year Whitmer inexplicably vetoed $155 million in reading scholarships for Michigan students. Only weeks ago, in a move that infuriated parents, Whitmer rejected a plan that would have invested money directly into students rather than self-serving unions. Though Whitmer will likely veto the bill at the behest of her donors at the teachers union, parent’s are glad to see their Republican legislators making a stand.

“Divisive liberal rhetoric has no place in our schools, and no child should be exposed to the far-left’s attempts to indoctrinate them,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “By passing HB 5097, Michigan Republicans have sent a firm message to the ‘woke’ mob that they will stand-up and protect our students.”
