Lansing, Mich., February 1, 2022 – After Jocelyn Benson helped execute Gretchen Whitmer’s money-laundering scheme, the Secretary of State is now in hot water for accepting her own excessive, illegal donation. Michigan Rising Action is filing a complaint against Benson for accepting illegal union contributions totaling $81,500, exceeding the limit of $71,500 by $10,000. The failure to follow the law is exceptionally embarrassing for Benson, a Harvard-educated attorney, whose violation of the law shows she is either knowingly breaking the law or a comically incompetent lawyer. Michiganders have the right to know whether their Secretary of State is actively engaging in criminal activity or if Benson is ignorant to the law.
This latest revelation of another high-profile Michigan Democrat violating campaign finance laws further cements their place as the “rules for thee, not for me” party. It is time for Benson to take the right and ethical action and return the excess funds to the donors. However, recent history shows that Benson is okay with laundering the money back into her campaign using the Michigan Democratic Party.
“It is time for Jocelyn Benson to be held accountable for violating the very laws she swore to uphold in the interest of personal and political gain,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “As the state’s top campaign finance official, Benson’s inability to follow the law casts severe doubts on her ability to do her job and rule on other campaign finance issues. Until the Secretary of State can learn to follow the law she should recuse herself from future rulings.”
Violation of the Michigan Campaign Finance Act includes penalties of up to a $1,000 fine and or 90 days in jail. State law requires complaints made against the Secretary of State to be referred to the Attorney General for investigation. Michigan Rising Action is calling on Dana Nessel to investigate this clear violation and uphold the sanctity of Michigan law.
