Nessel Used Expungement Fair for Photo Ops While Hiding Concern About Violence

Lansing, Mich., March 2, 2022 – Dana Nessel used an Expungement Fair in Genesee County last year as a photo op to build her public image of being pro-criminal justice reform. Newly released emails show Nessel questioning if they would screen attendees as they enter the event while stating, “the carrying of firearms will be a dealbreaker for participants.”

Michiganders are now questioning if the state’s top law enforcement officer felt unsafe, should she have been expunging those individuals’ records? Others will question if Dana Nessel was stereotyping the attendees as “once a criminal, always a criminal.” The Center Square reports:

“The meaning of the email is unclear as Nessel’s office hasn’t responded to a request for comment. On one hand, Nessel may have been concerned that the people she’s expunging are violent; on the other hand, she might have been expressing her antagonism against all firearms, even when carried legally. Also in question is how she expected officials to deal with law enforcement or Michiganders with a legal concealed carry permit.”

Nessel had no problem dancing and taking photos with the people attending the event, making sure she appeared to be the champion of criminal justice reform. Nessel’s email shows Michiganders a different picture, one where the Attorney General had concerns for the individuals whose records she was expunging.

“Dana Nessel’s political agenda is and will always be her top priority. Not the safety of Michiganders,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “If Nessel is concerned about expunging people’s criminal records with a history of violence, then she is not keeping people safe and carrying out her role as Michigan’s top law enforcement officer.”
