Benson Consultant Pushes for Mask Mandates in Schools

Lansing, Mich., May 16, 2022 – An organization with ties to the state’s Democrat leaders renewed their push for universal masking today. The organization, Michigan Parent Alliance for Safe Schools (MiPASS), is led by Emily Mellits, a consultant for Democrat Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s campaign and employed at democratic consulting firm Farough & Associates. As the press contact MiPASS Mellits has advocated for universal masking in public schools.

In a since-deleted tweet, Mellits confirmed she is a consultant to Benson’s campaign and that Benson hired her knowing her connection to the mask mandate advocacy group:

On Monday, MiPASS continued to push a return to universal masking in schools for grades K-12. Farough & Associates, a well-known democratic political consulting firm, has worked on the campaigns of high ranking Michigan Democrats, including Jocelyn Benson, Debbie Stabenow, and Gary Peters. According to campaign finance reports, Farough & Associates has received $297,493.47 from Benson’s candidate committee since 2017.

The forced masking of children in schools has been detrimental to children’s social and developmental skills, despite children having a limited risk of severe illness or death from COVID.

“The push by Jocelyn Benson’s campaign consultants to force children to wear masks in schools has nothing to do with science and everything to do with government control,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “Evidence shows that masking children is detrimental to development and social skills and parents deserve the freedom to make appropriate decisions for their families.”
