Whitmer’s War on Energy Hampering Michigan Police Departments

June 8, 2022

Lansing, Mich., June 8, 2022 – In a post on Facebook, the Isabella County Sheriff’s Office warned residents of first responders’ limited response capabilities due to high gas prices causing the office to exceed their fuel budget for the year.

Gretchen Whitmer’s Administration has taken a hard line towards the energy industry in Michigan, while prioritizing the agenda of activist environmental groups.

Whitmer’s war on energy has included a years-long effort to shut down Line 5, which would have detrimental effects on the sector in Michigan, and arbitrary clean energy goals in the name of environmental justice developed without concern for the impact on consumers. Additionally, Whitmer vetoed a gas tax suspension that would have provided relief at the pump.

In June of 2020, Whitmer publicly stated that she supported the “spirit” of efforts to defund the police. Despite not having direct authority over local police budgets, Whitmer’s energy policies are having a direct impact on their ability to keep communities safe. The inability of police officers to fully execute their job will impact public safety.

“Gretchen Whitmer waged a war on energy and as a direct result has found a way to defund the police,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “The situation in Isabella County is likely happening across Michigan and will directly impact the ability of police departments to keep communities safe.”
