Whitmer No Longer Hides Her Hypocrisy

June 13, 2022

Lansing, Mich., June 13, 2022 – Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s hypocrisy continues as the Governor vetoed another tax relief plan, despite recently voicing support for proposals that would provide relief to Michigan families.

Whitmer vetoed another tax relief measure less than 24 hours after stating she would do “everything [she] can” to help residents keep more of their paychecks.

Whitmer vetoed the $2.5 billion tax relief plan the same day CPI reports showed inflation rose 8.6% in May, reaching a 40-year high. Rising gas, grocery, and housing costs have impacted families across the nation, forcing many to manage rising costs for basic goods on fixed incomes. CNBC reported

“Surging shelter, gasoline and food prices all contributed to the increase. Energy prices broadly rose 3.9% from a month ago, bringing the annual gain to 34.6%. Within the category, fuel oil posted a 16.9% monthly gain, pushing the 12-month surge to 106.7%.”

The recent veto is a stark reminder of Whitmer’s pattern of voicing support for tax relief and then vetoing tax relief plans that reach her desk. Just this year, Whitmer has:

  • Vetoed an income tax write-off plan for retirement taxes after she proposed to end the retirement tax.
  • Vetoed a suspension of the state gas tax after she supported suspending both the state and federal gas taxes.
  • Vetoed property tax relief for veterans the same day she pushed for affordable housing for veterans.

“Gretchen Whitmer is no longer hiding her hypocrisy. Time after time, Whitmer claims to support tax relief for Michiganders and yet, vetoes major tax relief plans” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “Michigan needs a governor that will take leadership when times are tough, support real options for tax relief, and not play political games with Michiganders’ hard-earned incomes.”
