Whitmer’s Gas Tax Plan Backfires, Gaslights Michiganders

Whitmer’s Gas Tax Plan Backfires, Gaslights Michiganders

June 22, 2022

Lansing, Mich., June 22, 2022 – Governor Gretchen Whitmer vetoed a gas tax suspension plan on April 1st of this year. Over two months later, she is trying to claim that she previously supported a gas tax suspension for the state.

Now today, President Biden urged states to suspend their own gas tax. The announcement comes a day after Governor Gretchen Whitmer penned a letter to the President, asking for a federal gas tax suspension, and just weeks after Whitmer vetoed a statewide gas tax suspension.

Moments after Biden’s announcement, Whitmer sent out a press release, stating:

“In March, I called for a temporary suspension of the state sales tax on gas….”

That means Whitmer vetoed a plan she allegedly supported. She then opted for public negotiations with the legislature and would only consider the suspension on her own terms. This approach is all about politics for the Governor as she campaigns for reelection.

Michigan’s average gas price reached $5.22 this month, and residents have resorted to desperate measures to pay for high fuel costs.

“Gretchen Whitmer’s plan to score political points completely backfired with President Biden urging states to suspend their gas tax,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “Whitmer is now gaslighting Michiganders by claiming she supports a state gas tax suspension after she vetoed the plan just weeks ago.”
