Fireworks, Food, and Fuel Costs Reach New Heights This Holiday Weekend

July 1, 2022

Lansing, Mich., July 1, 2022 – This 4th of July weekend, families can expect to pay more for fireworks, food, and fuel as inflationary prices continue to impact consumer prices. Families are already struggling with high costs, and the continued price hikes will make it challenging to celebrate Independence Day this weekend.

Inflationary shipping costs mean firework prices are up nearly 35% this year compared to last year. Supply chain shortages could mean canceled firework shows, hampering the American tradition for kids and families.

Food costs will also remain high this weekend as families, neighbors, and communities join together to celebrate freedom. The price tag of a summer barbeque increased 17% from last year, with ground beef and chicken costing 30% more than last year. Families can expect to pay $10 more for their backyard barbecue this year after the Biden administration celebrated a measly 16-cent drop in prices last year.

Fuel costs are expected to remain high and impact weekend travel plans, making it difficult for families to visit Michigan’s tourist towns and create summer memories. Gas prices are still hovering around $5 per gallon after Governor Gretchen Whitmer vetoed a gas tax suspension that would have provided relief at the pump this summer.

Inflation remains a top issue for many Americans as the 4th of July approaches. President Biden has done little to combat the record-high increases and indicated that inflation could last longer than expected

“Together, Governor Whitmer and President Biden have made it more costly for families to celebrate the 4th of July and the many freedoms we have,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “At a time when every penny matters and prices for goods explode, Whitmer and Biden refuse to take action on inflation and help families. Michigan and America deserve better from our leaders.”
