Lansing, Mich., February 2, 2023 – New campaign finance filings by the Michigan Senate Democratic Fund have revealed that the campaign arm of the Senate Democratic Caucus failed to report over one million dollars in campaign funds properly.
The missing reports, including a substantial loan taken out by the committee and a donation from the political action committee run by State Senator Jeremy Moss, should have been filed in late October – weeks before the 2022 November election. The Michigan Campaign Finance Act requires organizations to file “24 Hour Contribution Reports” for any contribution received in excess of $1000 within two weeks of an election. The full complaint can be read here.
“Michigan Democrats continue to show they think they’re above the law by hiding where they received their contributions. The people of Michigan deserve to know the truth of who is funding elections in their state,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “Will Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson continue to turn a blind eye, or will she enforce penalties to the rules everyone else is required to follow?”
The Michigan Campaign Finance Act requires a civil fine of “not more than $1,000.00 or the amount of the contributions and expenditures omitted or underreported, whichever is greater.” (emphasis added).
