NEW: Michigan Rising Action Appeals Redistricting Commission’s FOIA Denial
Lansing, Mich., November 29, 2021 – Michigan Rising Action has filed an appeal of the Michigan “Independent” Citizens Redistricting Commission denial to release documents and recordings about the Commission’s October 27 closed-door meeting. While Commission staff cited attorney-client privilege in denying the release of materials, they did not offer any information about why the records fell within the scope of attorney-client privilege or the Attorney General’s opinion that the meeting likely violated the Constitution.
“The Commission has made critical decisions based on these documents and the people of Michigan deserve to know what they contain,” said Eric Ventimiglia, Executive Director for Michigan Rising Action. Ventimiglia continued, “There is no justifiable reason for the Commission to withhold these documents, and they must be released immediately.”
